2.4.12-benh0 on Powerbook G4 (Titanium) 500

Greetings again. I apologize if this is a bit "fringe", but I'm hoping
someone out there can help me with my new question.

Background:

Recently purchased a new Powerbook G4 500 and got Yellow Dog 2.1 up and
running on it (after a lot of work and help from some of you). There
were some difficulties with the stock 2.4.10-12a kernel with recognizing
the DVD/CD-ROM drive, which prevented me from being able to mount any
CDs. Knew that going in, but want to reap the benefits of the 2.4
kernel, so I refused to follow Dan Burkaw's advice and stay down with
the 2.2 kernel (which has no device problems on my particular machine).

Issue(s):

After getting all but the CD/DVD drive working under the stock YD 2.1
kernel, I downloaded and installed Ben H.'s latest stabe (2.4.12-benh0)
from the ppckernel.org Web site. Came up without a hitch, and I can now
mount data CDs and read them, but cannot play (mount, or rip) music CDs.
I'm also getting strange gdm crashes, but I'm less concerned with that
(especially since I can start at run-level 3 and manually 'startx'
without the gdm crash problem inhibiting my work).

Plea:

Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on with playing (or not
being able to) music CDs. Obviously, this makes the machine less fun as
a multimedia machine.

Thanks.

 CW

PS -- As a side note, if anyone knows of another forum wherein this
question may be more appropriate, please pass along that info.
