I had a problem like this. What was causing it was that for some reason
the default route to eth0 (ethernet port) didn't get changed when the
modem logged on to something. Result was that anything looking for packets
went to the ethernet port.

Unfortunatly, I'm not sitting in front of m y machine at the moment, so I
can't relate my fix. It involved a script that got run after ppppd got
setup (I run pppd "raw", i.e. I just call it from the command line instead
of mucking about with kppp which never worked for me...). There is
probably an easier fix involving some config file somewhere, because 1.2
never gave me the problem. The fix I use, which adds a new route everytime
I dial in, just happened to be the first fix I found.

Hopefully, this is enough to guide your web searches for information (how
I found the fix), or for someone here to volenteer more information than I
can provide at the moment.
