cdrom (round three) - where's the audio?

I can access audio cds from my internal ata cdrom drive, but when I try
playing them there isn't any audio sound. I've tried setting up the drive two
ways:

1) in the Xboot app I issue a command to the kernel:

"hda=cdrom" : drive is present, and is a cdrom drive

then in a terminal widow: ln -s /dev/hda /dev/cdrom

I am able to mount iso9660 cds and I can even access audio cds using kde
cdplayer, however I can't hear any music.

2) in the Xboot app I issue a command to the kernel:

"hda=ide-scsi"

then ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrom

again, I am able to mount iso9660 cds and I can even access audio cds using
kde cdplayer, however I can't hear any music.

What am I missing? Here is what dmesg says when booting:
