I had a similar problem on a Blue G3. Repeated attempts. stalled.
I was sure it was a hardware problem and it turned out to be the way I had my
EIDE using a slave drive on the same interface as the CDROM.
Once I removed the auxuliary hard drive from the CDROM's chain, everyting
went fine.
