i got past this problem by following the steps outlined in an earlier
message::

this allowed me to "graduate" to the next problem, a segmentation fault
when it starts formatting. whee :)

P.S.: on my G4 desktop the keys to get to the command prompt were CTRL
OPTION (then let go) and then press F2. to get to the installer press CTRL
OPTION and then F1.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that I tried this...but I couldn't find a
shell that would support doing this.
