have you tried building the alsa modules?
i compiled and got alsa 0.9b8 up and running on an imac g3 400 with
little bother. it was running ppc mandrake 8 (2.4.notsure kernel),
alsa seemed to hose my dmasound modules but the new snd-card-pmac driver
has got a lower latency than the dma. i am prob going to try yellow dog
soon.... (although i'm a bit scared of all the 'issues' on this list...)
