There is most likely a problem with the X configuration, causing infinite
respawning because X won't boot. As was instructed by an earlier email, boot
into runlevel 3 so you can troubleshoot at the command line. Run startx to
see why X is complaining. I had a similar problem because of a bad video
config, which may be an issue in your case.
