kernel builds are one of the most CPU and system intensive things you can
do with your computer, and builds ahve a tendancy to flush out bugs and
subtle hardware errors that normal use wouldn't.
I sugesst booting with a non-SMP kernel for your build and see if that
helps (less changce for lock contension inside the running kernel).
