I thought about this more. Make sure your case is cool. The 8500 case is
pretty packed, espically if you have a lot of cards, this could just be a
temperture issue. Try the build with the case off, or add another fan,
either 80mm case or PCI slot. Yes the ppc tunds cooler than most of the
Athalons, but still...

Could also me a memory bug, does the 8500 take ECC ram (I can't remember..
and I've sent all my 8500 to the scrap heap two weeks ago...)

There was something else... Ahh yes. The power supply, make sure it's
getting a consistent flow of power. If you have a UPS, try the build with
the 8500 attached to it. I've seen +/-5V power fluctuations scramble a
running process before without causing the machine to reboot. Granted it
was a 486 which is slightly more resilient to that sort of thing, but
still.... :)
