Thanks a lot Romain, I needed to recompile the kernel to have just macserial
inside and serial module NOT loadable, otherwise I would have many problems.
I was also not able to compile rp3, because it need gnome libraries and, for
same misterious reasons, I found out that I do not have Gnome at all in my
YDL2.1 (while it was there in YDL2.0...).

Anyway I used pppd, setting up by hand all files, and, after all this, I was
sort of excited, the modem finally woke up.

Now the dial is ok, username ok, password ok and it seems connected, this is
"tail -f /var/log/message"
...
Nov 19 15:41:10 fomalhaut pppd[831]: Serial connection established.
Nov 19 15:41:10 fomalhaut pppd[831]: Using interface ppp0

Nov 19 15:41:11 fomalhaut pppd[831]: local IP address 212.171.163.13
Nov 19 15:41:11 fomalhaut pppd[831]: remote IP address 212.131.92.135

The connection is there, when I stop it, it tells also the time of
connection, everything seems fine, but I can not telnet anywhere or reach
internet sites, I get "no route ot host" or "do not exist"...

I am using the same provider that I am using under MacOS, the address of the
provider is the remote IP above.
If I try "ping local IP", "ping remote IP" they are ok, "ping something
else" is not, there is something I do not completely understand...

any suggestion?
thanks,

filippo
