You can create a ~/.xinitrc file and put the command:
startkde
in it. The next time you type startx as that user, it will start kde for
you.

OK, now I did it ...
Used the Desktop Switcher tool in KDE to change to (I think) a non-existent
window manager and now when I "startx" as user, I get the gray screen with
the X in the middle that never progresses.
What do I need to do in text login to retrieve ability to get a desktop
environment?
