MkLinux is based on the Mach Kernel whereas all the other PPC ports
(YellowDog, LinuxPPC, Debian) use the monolithic Linux/PPC kernel.

MkLinux currently uses the 2.0.x kernel. There are plans to update it,
but I don't know what the timeframe for that is. You basically have a
small group of people headed by David Gatwood (now working at Apple!)
running this project. Check out <http://www.mklinux.org>. Yes, most of
the web site hasn't been updated in a while.

MkLinux DR3 (the last one released by Apple over 2 years ago) uses old
libc libraries, and thus is incompatible w/ newer PPC binaries. Some
people are still using it, but IMHO its primary purpose is using it for
a basic install prior to moving to a monolithic port on Nubus Macs. See
<http://nubus-pmac.sourceforge.net>. If you want to run MkLinux, make
sure you download the pre-R1 distro.

HTH.

Pete

MkLinux also ran on early PCI PowerMacs. Apple doesn't support it
any more, though there does seem to be a small group of people
outside Apple who are still trying to update it.

MkLinux has some significant differences in the kernel. It's not a
true Linux but rather a Linux "server" sitting on top of the Mach
microkernel. YDL uses the standard Linux kernel.

Some.
