YDL 2.1 - where is Voodoo support?

YDL 2.1 no longer seems to support a Voodoo3 3000 card. I can only get
the card working by selecting the 'No video driver' in BootX which
inevitably means slower screen response.

Do the newer kernels lack Voodoo3 support and if so, how can I put it
back in? Is there anything else I can do, short of returning to the
older kernels?

PS. I've tried Xconfigurator and Xautoconfig with no success
