There are known problems with the aRts server and PPC in KDE at this time.
There was a posting earlier today that the brand-newest kernels have fixed
this, but the brand-newest BenH kernel didn't fix it for me, and the
mainline kernels don't have audio drivers for my iBook2.
My solution? Kill the aRts server and let xmms use the esound plugin.
Works great ... but only for esound-compatible apps.
