gtkglarea configure error

I tried to configure gtkglarea 1.2.2 by issuing ./configure
--with-lib-MesaGL, however I get the following error:

checking Mesa... no
checking Mesa with pthreads... no
configure: error: Missing MesaGL library

find / -name "*MesaGL*" locates the library at

/usr/lib/libMesaGLw.a

also, come to think of it, not all of the gl screensavers work either. Can
someone tell me how to fix this? Thanks.
