if you are NOT installed yet:
If you use yaboot, put it next to yaboot.tbxi, yaboot.conf, and
ramdisk.image.gz, either in the root level of an HFS drive or a valid
system folder on an HFS drive. It doesn't like HFS+. Then add a new entry
(just copy the existing one again, and change the name for it, and change
the default at the top) with the new kernel name.
If you use the other booter, put it next to the existing kernel
placed when you inztalled the booter. You can tell it which one at boot
time.

If you are installed and running:
wherever your bootloader looks for the kernel, put the new one next
to it.

In either case: boot up the new kernel. Next, the modules.conf and
dependencies stuff needs to go next to the extant ones. Then delete the
links AFTER noting down the names, and make new links with the same names
(which point to the new kernel's files). to find them, use

find | grep modules

the output will tell you where the modules are as a full path. use gzip
and/or tar as needed to extract the new stuff.
