Thanks for all who responded to my plight. Here's what finally
worked. I changed my /etc/hosts file to read like this:

127.0.0.0 localhost localhost.localdomain
192.168.77.21 myYDLMachine

where myYDLMachine is the machine's name. No DNS necessary, I just
made up a name and bingo, the machine has a name and ProFtp works.
