Reuben,
        Is the kernel in your system folder? If so, try a path like this:

image = hd:x,vmlinux
     label = linux
     root = /dev/hdb12
     ...

        My problem was that I was saying image= hd:x,\\vmlinux and
that didn't work so well. Just a suggestion.
