you're trying to boot off a ramdisk.

change it to

>image = hd:9,\\vmlinux
>label = linux
>root = /dev/hda13
>append = "video=aty128fb:vmode:17"

and give it a whirl. BTW, it may or may not necessitate adding or deleting
the backslashes to find the image.

The second question? no idea.
