When you start up you'll get a message giving the kernel version - at a
guess it's 2.2.16. The kernel that comes with Yellowdog is modified from
the standard distribution.

You can get new kernel source code from www.kernel.org. Download this and
unzip it - it should appear in a folder named "linux". Do a "cd linux"
followed by "make xconfig" - that'll create a kernel configuration utility.
However, before going any further you must read up about kernel
configuration!
