I don't know what machine you're using--I'm using an iMac DV SE. These
newer Macs play CDs differently; it's first read as digital data and
then converted to audio. Apparently this improves the quality of the
sound. Regrettably most of Linux's CD players don't support this (yet).
        In imaclinux.net you can find an article about trying to get sound to
work. I wasn't able to do it (I'm in the same boat you are with the
kernel/module conflicts). The closest so far I've gotten to getting CD
sound are some staticky noises; these were produced by the alsaplayer
from http://www.alsaplayer.org. This also plays MP3s though, and very
well. AArthur wrote the article, and he got it to work, so it's just a
matter of trying.
