I had a similar problem and got a $9.95 Ethernet card from Virtual
Information Systems on eBay. This PCI network card features the Realtek
8139B/C chipset (which my research had indicated was supported even by the
2.2.X kernel), and automatically optimizes for 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps
operation. It also supports duplex mode. This network card works in both PC
and Mac computers.
