You might be able to specify the resolution and refresh rate as kernel
parameters, without using a video mode. E.g., I use
"video=aty128fb:1280x1024@60" (on a Cube with 17" LCD). This is
probably specific to the video driver. For aty128fb, it's only in the
2.4 kernels as far as I know, not in the 2.2 kernels.
