Might be a little late, but for the amount of time and effort it takes, it
might just be nicer if you buy him a new hard drive and send him on his way.

You're all set and don't have permissions and ownership to worry about, and
he's got a new hard drive.

You'll have to do a min install of YDL (include ftpd). Network the
two machines, transfer the file from the old machine to the new one,
then ungzip and untar the file. Then just replace everything.
