I forgot to mention I am using kernel-2.4.10-B0a from
ftp://ftp.linuxppc.org/users/kfukui/kernel-2.4.x.Ben/kernel-SMP/

I will try next Dan Burcaw's 2.4.12; maybe it will fix these problems.
