Thanks to those who offered suggestions for my scsi troubles. It turns
out the problem was that the last device on the physical scsi chain needs
to be terminated - last has nothing to do with scsi ID's. It's the
last device on the ribbon cable that needs to be terminated.

P.S. This might be completely wrong but at least my computer boots now.
