I understand the problem. I had the identical thing happening on my iMac g3.
if you have a hub with operating lights, see if they go dark at or just
before that point... if yes, try one of BenH's kernels from
http://ppclinux.apple.com/~benh/ . These require some login as root
reconfiguring (see past two weeks digests), but they do work.
