Don't know about the modem- but you may not have to manually power off.

control-alt-delete frequently will kill the X server cleanly. If not

Control-Command-F2 (or F3 or F4...) should bring up another console,
you can log in as root-

ps -aux |grep X

you should see something like

root 6136 blah blah /etc/X11/X

6136 will probably be different- but anyway, whatever the number-

[root@host root]# kill -9 6136

Log out, Control-Command-F1 should bring you back to your primary console.

Manually shutting down in linux is RARELY really needed.
