In the latest kernels (2.4.x) firewire is actually working pretty well.
However, there isn't any support for firewire harddrives yet. There is
initial support for digital video cameras and ethernet over firewire
though. I've only tested it out with my friend's Sony XL1 on an OHCI
firewire card with my x86 computer, but I imagine if you spent the time
you could get it working with a PPC. A good starting point to look at
