Help getting TCP started

I'm a new user bringing up my system on a powermac for the first time.
TCP/IP isn't running properly.
The system has retrieved the right IP adddress from the dhcp server, and has
the right DNS servers in resolve.conf, but it can't ping anything.

The ifconfig command shows that packets are being sent, but most receive
packets are being discarded.

Anyone know where I should look for the problem?
