Its not a bug in php

php 4.0.2 builds just fine.
you may have a bug in your configure script.

Try posting your configure options as you pass them to the configure script-
i.e.

./configure --enable-blah --enable-foo=/usr --disable-bar

You might actually want to post them to the list on the php forum board.
Your problem isn't yellow dog linux specific, and you may get faster
help there.
