Having nothing better to do, I went back to MacOS and
repartitioned the drive so that what previously was
"unallocated" is now a real empty partition. I then went back
to the installer, deleted that partition, put my partitions the
way I want them, and THEN the YDL installer was happy.

The drive came from Apple with MacOS preinstalled on the whole
disk, so it's not like the disk wasn't ever formatted.

What does that purport to fix?

Uh, I don't have to back up /tmp? /tmp can get trashed and I
        don't really care?
