Well, I use .Xclients.. I'm not sure if this is the same as .xinitrc,
though they have similar uses.

My .Xclients is setup to do
stuff &
more stuff &
exec windowmanager

then X exits when I log out of my window manager. You could easily add
stuff after the exec of the window manager, and this would be run after
you quit the window manager, but before X actually exits.
