thanks for replying Matthew, and to anyone else who posted
after the last digest.

so maybe eth0 is already tied-up with something ?

here's exactly what i did, incase it helps anyone, and
because i'm not sure which stage solved the problem:

in OS 9, switch AppleTalk to <Remote Only>
quit and save
turn off AppleTalk
reboot
reboot from YDL2.0 CD
install as per Install Guide

all fixed - now for some fun!
