Hey everbody,

Just thought I'd ask a few questions and show my ignorance. :P

I installed YDL 2.0 on a Sawtooth G4 with few problems (well, aside from
forgetting to put in a Zip disk and not realizing that the boot partition
didn't need to be labeled), but I'm not really sure where to start when it
comes to compiling source code. Here's what I wanted to do (and I'm not sure
what's Yellow Dog-specific):

Compile and install kde 2.2, kexpress, kxicq, and upgrade my kernel to the
latest stable version.

I understand about avoiding x86-specific stuff (when it's obvious), but I
don't understand the difference between say, make and gmake, or why when I
tried to compile kexpress it told me I couldn't create a small kde
application? I also had no luck with kxicq, which actually ran, but bombs
out with an error as soon as I try to configure it. Also, can the Package
Manager actually use apt-get, or do I need to do something else before it can?

Is any of this making sense? If I went to linuxnewbie and asked for help,
would I tell them I'm running Yellow Dog, or a PPC variant of Red Hat?

TIA for any help...

Peace,

dre
