Subject: Which distribution should I use?

Sorry for the silly question but I am relatively new to the world of Linux.
I am going to upgrade to KDE 2.2 and I would like to know which
distribution I should download? Obviously I'll want a PPC distribution but
it appears there are several available. SuSE and Mandrake to name a few. I
figure I can D/L the source and compile it myself but this is a question I
would like to answer as I am in the dark as to the how's and why's of
different distributions of binaries. Why are there more than one for the
PPC, for example? And there is never mention of a YDL distribution. My
guess is that YDL uses someone elses?
Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and I did search the list archives for an answer to my question but did
not find a suitable answer. Perhpase this is a good time to spell it out
for us newbies!
