This is inspired by a previous post on the topic but I thought it was
worth a discussion on the list.

Recently, Ximian expanded its updater ( available by running a terminal
windows, su'ing and running 'lynx --source http://go-gnome.com | sh' )
to include Yellow Dog Linux 2.0 as an available distro for updates.

I liked the 1.4 update on my K6-2 machine, and thought I'd try it. The
result was such a mess I did a quick backup of my data files and just
did a fresh CD install. I was curious if other people have experienced
problems with the update under YDL as well. My problems centered on the
control panels and problems with my CORBA server 'disappearing'
sporatically and a strange problem with the "Logoff/Shutdown/Reboot"
menu background fade running EXCRUTIATINGLY slow. There were many other
minors, including menus, programs not launching.

If other people are experiencing similar problems, perhaps we should
publicly discourage the update for YDL folks until the bugs get
unwrinkled, or if you've had these problems and found a solution, it'd
make a nice contribution to the public knowledge. Perhaps we may be
able to offer some end-user testing for the clean up work if some people
are willing.

All in all, I'd like to update, I like some of the new features
expecially for the panel applets like grouped task lists, but there are
too many bugs over all to make it worth the hassle.
