If your machine stops responding on eth0 to everything, but otherwise
seems to be running, then you may be having problems with the
ethernet hardware. On my beige G3, I couldn't get more than a couple
days without the network stack giving up. I eventually put in a PCI
ethernet card, and it's been running fine for many months.
