Wow, this is pretty good response time..... Anyway, 'fbset -x' revealed
the following:

This I dutifully plugged into XF86Config after figuring out the format
of the entries. X notices my entry (and deletes it) only when I make
mistakes; when the entry is within the bounds, as it is in my "final"
version, it's not even mentioned in the error messages. Still, no X
coming up. Here's the pertinent portion of XF86Config, as well as
another error message dump:
