Seeing as this is the case, I hope no one minds if I ask some questions
that have probably already been asked this month. I'm a reasonably
experienced user (Redhat since 5.0, recently switched to Debian) and am
trying to help a neighbor set up yellowdog on his B&W.

1) Is FTP install supposed to work, or is it still extremely beta? If it's
beta, I provide these as a bug report, if not, well, I hope someone can
help me out. At this point, this is only a summary- I'll post details when
I have access to my friend's machine again. He's got a paper due tomorrow
:-)

Basically, after fiddling with numerous file locations, the installer
finds the stage2.img file, and the install procedes. Occasionally, this
will either cause an SIOADDRCART error, which freezes the installer. More
often, it will give the same errors I've described below. The rest of the
time (maybe 1/2 of all attempts) it'll get through and grab the image.

If it does get past that stage, it goes fine through to package selection.
After that, there is an obscure error related to "line 107" (don't recall
the name of the file- I'll find it later). The installer procedes to search
the site for the .rpms. It can't get them, despite attempting the proper
URLs (according to the record in the third terminal.) Without fail, I get
one of two error messages: either the server "can't be put into sleep
mode" or there is an "I/O error." I get the same messages when using
ftp.yellowdoglinux.com, ftp.linuxberg.com, and the uiuc site.

Any hints? Suggestions? Thoughts?

2) Is there a cd-image somewhere on the FTP site? I've tried to burn a
disc in the configuration indicated by

ftp://ftp.yellowdoglinux.com/pub/yellowdog/champion-1.0/ppc/README

but the install program does not recognize it as a yellowdog disc. Should
the disc have a specific title? Or is there another trick to it?

3) Is there a text-only (i.e., searchable) version of the install guide?
The .pdf version is great for those who don't know what they are doing
(which I guess is the main goal here) but not particularly helpful for
those who have done RedHat installs in the past. Plus, it assumes that
you have bought the CD- there is absolutely no attempt to explain
procedures for those who are trying to get the distro from the 'Net. Is
there any help anywhere for people like that (i.e., like me?)

Thanks in advance for your help- I look forward to contributing once my
friend's system is up-
