I read the recent postings between Phil Kirschner and Neil Jolly with the
hopes of learning how to increase my screen refresh rates. I have a
PPC-9500 with a G3 upgrade and an ATI Nexus GA graphics card with 8 Megs
of RAM and am using Kernel-2.2.12-2. The monitor is an Apple MultiSync
20". After switching from the XFree86 version that shipped with CS1.1 to
version 3.3.5-1.6.0c I am unable to get X to run at all.

After installing the set of rpms from dev.linux.org I ran Xconfigurator.
It recognizes only 5Meg of RAM when the monitor is set for 1280x1024 and
millions of colors on the Mac side and it recognizes only 1Meg when the
monitor is set for thousands of colors and 1024x768. One result is that I
am not given the choice of selecting 1280X1024 at 24 bits resolution in
Xconfigurator because, I guess, X does not think I have enough video RAM.

If no video driver is checked, the system runs in terminal
mode (runlevel 3) but if it is unchecked, the terminal goes blank and
powers down after about the first five or ten lines into the initial boot
process although the machine does seem to continue booting in the dark so
to speak.

Is there a way I can get this system to work with more responsive video in
X? A different video card? A different kernel?

Thanks,

Ron Z
