Forgive me if this is too basic:

Any precompiled programs (or binaries) will have been compiled for a
particular kind of computer. To use any program, you either have to
find a binary that was built (compiled) for your machine (Yellowdog
Linux or LinuxPPC) or you have to compile yourself. If it says it is
a BINARY for Intel Linux, it won't work. For instance: the
Applixware demo won't work. RealPlayer won't work.

Compiling yourself isn't too tough. Instead of downloading
things called "xxxxxx.bin.tgz" download "xxxxxxxx.src.tgz" Untar it
with "tar -zxvf xxxxxxxxx.src.tgz" and enter the new directory called
"xxxxxxxxxx" Here you will find either a README or an INSTALL file
(or both) that will tell you what you need to do to compile
(/build/make)

As far as SETI@HOME goes, it does run on LinuxPPC, and there
are probably binaries out there. The latest I heard was that you
could run it, but it you can't get the cool graphics. Search the
mailing lists at www.linuxppc.org for a recent discussion of linuxppc
(and consider also getting on the linuxppc-user list. The answers
don't tend to be as unilaterally high-quality as those here, but they
come faster.)

Good luck,
Adam
