I got this message below that tells me that I need USB support sense,
and to get that I need kernal 2.2.12-2...

I apologize in advance for this basic question. I'm totally new to
linux, I'm trying to teach myself, but it's not half as easy as Windows or
MacOS(which were extremely easy for me to use).

I downloaded the the kernel, in fact I downloaded the whole 2.2.12
folder. There aren't any decent directions on how to update my kernel. Do I
need to compile it first? It tells me that the only file I need is the
vmlinux2.2.12-2 in my system folder, I tried doing that, but nothing even
happened...Does it mean that should replace the old one in the process? I
know how to compile, and I even know a little about C, C++, and I'm not
stupid- all I need is some straightforward direction. Can someone help me
out or point me in the right direction? Your help is seriously appreciated.

Thanx,

Sam A.
