Kernel panic - yuck. I haven't dealt much with these...

-Did you get any errors when making the kernel?
-What version is the tulip driver?

If you do

grep becker /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/tulip.c

you should get this line

static const char version[] = "tulip.c:v0.91g-ppc 7/16/99 becker@cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov\n";

Is that what you get????
