Andrew,
It's generally not a good idea to log in as root for general usage of linux over
the internet. It exposes you and your system to too much risk. Most IRC
servers specifically exclude users who log in as root. There are just a few
things you need to do logged in as root. Adding a new user is one of them.
Installing some software is another.
You can use the adduser command to add a new user if you are logged in as root.
I'd suggest using the same user-id you use on your isp. When you log in to
connect to your isp, you may have to use the su command to log a single terminal
into root in order to start kppp, but your ksirc session should be done from
your user account.
Generally if you're a new linux user, you'll find you have a lot to learn in a
hurry. The documentation and integration in linux is nothing like what you may
have become accustomed to in other operating systems. There's no coherent help
system, but lots of different things written about a variety of useful topics at
various times over the last 20 years. The documentation is regularly updated
and is available , in a variety of formats, but it can be a bit daunting to a
new user. First stop is your public library, if you are fortunate enough to
have one available. Get a basic text on linux (usually about 600 pages) and
skim it at least. Think of the linux environment as a collection of tools
built by a variety of unix users, graduate students, hackers, programmers,
physicists, mathematicians and assorted other characters. The operative words
here are highly complex and adaptable. Get a list of the top 50 linux commands
and utilities. Read the "linux System Administrator's guide" It's available
online (gnu) .
