I've been having problems downloading mail from my ISP ever since
installing Linux back in August 1999. The problem occurs only in
Linux. I can download mail in MacOS. The problem appears the second
and all subsequent times I try to download after re-installing.
It is not limited to netscape. Telnet and fetchmail also have problems
correctly retrieving mail from my account. Curiously, the first time
after an installation, the download fetches the mail!

The symptom in Netscape is:

Click "Get Msg"
Netscape responds with a modal dialog: Contacting server...
and then : downloading message 1
of N
At this point Netscape hangs until the mail server times out.

I spent some time today with one of the support people at the ISP and
did some experimenting.

In telnet, the commands

user username
pass password
list
and other commands all work as expected, but the command

retr 1

gets a single line with the word OK and the size of the message, but
nothing more. The server eventually times out.

The same error did not occur with a new account created at the ISP on a
test machine where QMAIL 3.0b29 is running.

The server is a VAX running Unix (unknown variety.)

The ISP is in the process of re-configuring thier mail servers.
Hopefully they will upgrade QMAIL and this problem will go away. In the
meantime, does anyone have any more information on this problem?
