Hi,
I'm having grief installing YDL CS1.1 onto an ANS500/132. It's the first
non-AIX UNIX I've installed on these boxes, so please bear with me!

I'm following the info at ftp.emji.net/pub/ans/README.html for the YDL /
ANS instructions, which in turn point to www.demonsys.com/ans/ for info
about the battery.

The ANS has no PCI cards installed, just floppy, CD, DAT, 2Gb hard disk
(with AIX 4.1.5) and another 4Gb hard disk (free).

I've followed the instructions at ftp.emji.net and have got the 2
floppies and put ins.ydl.coff on one and vmlinux.coff on the other.

I then set the key on the front to the wrench, chuck the ins.ydl.coff
disk in and boot into Open Firmware, which shows:
OpenFirmware1.1.22
To continue booting from the default boot device type:
BOOT<return>
 ok
0 >

... I then type 'boot fd:ins.ydl.coff'. Following a spinning pipe/slash,
and some floppy disk chugging, I get:

fd:ins.ydl.coff loading XCOFF
tsize=5BB0 dsize=3F8 bsize=15AC entry=500000
SECTIONS:
.text 00500000 00500000 00005BB0 00000130
.data 00510000 00510000 000003F8 00005CE0
.bss 005103F4 005103F4 000015AC 00000000
initrd 00000000 00000000 000A9628 000060D8
image 00000000 00000000 0008C8D8 000AF700
loading .text, done...
loading .data, done...
clearing .bss, done...

...then when I do printenv it seems to have not stored the boot-device
stuff, as the output still says (some stuff stripped, hopefully all of it
was irrelevant!):

auto-boot true true
boot-device disk2:aix disk2:aix
boot-file
diag-device cd fd:diags cd fd:diags
boot-command boot boot

... Nevertheless I assume it's working, and turn it off (using the
rectangular on/off button on the front as I don't know the Open Firmware
command - init, shutdown & reboot don't cut it!).
Having downloaded the binaries (onto another ANS still on AIX, with the
intention of ftp'ing it over) I then follow the battery ritual, with the
exception that I'm not removing the internal hard disks (as I believe the
ins.ydl.coff alleviates this need) and don't have the floppy drive empty
(as the ins.ydl.coff floppy is still in it). I then reboot (front key
still on 'wrench') and get:
cd
fd:diags can't OPEN: /bandit/gc/swim3:diagsOpenFirmware1.1.22
To continue booting from the default boot device type:
BOOT<return>
 ok
0 >

I've also tried with key in 'unlocked' state (middle of the 3), but still
no joy.
If I go to OpenFirmware and type 'setenv boot-device fd:ins.ydl.coff'
then printenv it has indeed changed that variable so that it says:
boot-device fd:ins.ydl.coff disk2:aix
...but when I hard restart (with key in unlocked middle position) it's
the same as if I had gone into OpenFirmware and typed 'boot
fd:ins.ydl.coff'... it chugs away and gives me back a prompt. If I then
type 'boot' it does it again, but this time errors at the loading .text
section:
loading .textCLAIM failed

... I'm amazed how difficult I have managed to make this for myself! If
anyone can shed any light on this, please let me know.

Thanks very much in advance,
someone who knows less about the ANS than he thought!
