I normally copy the system default Xinitrc from
/usr/lib/X11/. Look for Xinitrc instead of .Xinitrc

After copying that file to your home dir, look near the
bottom where it starts up the window managers and xterms
and such. I usually modify it to start the things that I
want.

I'm not sure if there is a sample .xclients file. It
shouldn't need it and should not fail if it doesn't
exist. It's another way of starting programs from the
startx process.
