I ran into the same problem with OpenLinux 1.3.

They (Caldera) included the 4.1beta in their distro. I wanted to use 4.5
(which is a BAD idea- there are known bugs, use 4.6beta)

It complied fine, and had the same problem-- you can't login. PAM was not
configured correctly for it.

I not a pam expert, but I went back to the SRPMS of the 4.1beta that
Caldera shipped with Openliux 1.3 and examined the SPECS for rpm, and
applied their patches.

All their patches had to do with PAM- it looks like they cannibalized some
code from wuFTP to get it to work.

Needless to say, all the patches worked on 4.5, and they worked again on
4.6beta for me.

So, the bottom line is--- we need a PAM expert to wade in and see what's
not working on the PAM side of things.

Or else, someone take a look at the SRPMS from RH 5......
