I used this to configure X on my beige G3.

I start up in mode 3- that this multiuser text mode.

To start X i log in and run:

) startx --- starts GNOME

OR

) xinit - starts X with a rootless Xterm

(inside xterm)

) startkde

and that will run KDE if you have it installed.
